Filly Funtasia Episode 4: "Alone at Last" - Discussion

A nice little episode featuring the best Filly in a Forest, which is the closest thing we'll probably get to seeing Filly Forest in Filly Funtasia.

Wow, the animation sure took a step down from episode 3.

Haven't seen it yet until there are subs, but I wonder what order they wrote the episodes in. I know with G4 MLP, the third episode had oddities because it was the first episode written and they hadn't nailed down some things yet.

Filming a series out of order is a common technique to make sure that the first episode isn't the worst. I thought this ep still had some good moments, but I'm certainly glad it wasn't my first impression of the show!

I simply don't understand a shit of what they say, but I got full time to listen even more close to the backing music. And oh It's so great! I think they got very good competent people working on it. It is very varied with a lot of different instruments, and they got the right tunes for the right feelings. To me it's a high quality show, way better than any expectations I had. They really must get this to a broader audience. I bet the selling of Filly toys would take of in large amounts.

My honest favourite part of this episode is the "I'm not stupid, you know." line from Rose. And it's a relatable problem, too: these are kids who are very different from each other and their teachers *make* them work together. Rose doesn't want to be so annoying, but she's doing what she was told to do. It is a frustrating situation to get in, especially because your first response to such a thing is to try and change the other side. This is exactly the sort of thing you see in schools, except there it usually escalates to bullying or violence in some form or another.

It makes some sense from Lynn to like scary things, if you want to overthink it. Magical trance comes in all sorts of varieties, terror is one of them. Her reading scary books beats the alternatives in some of the literature, at least. Not sure what to think of her voice, though. It's got kind of a deeper Zecora-ish vibe to it that doesn't fit a child's voice quite like the others do.

On top of that, Wranglum apparently still gets surges of power when enraged. That makes him much more of a threat.

I do hope the show doesn't over-use the storm song like it has been the other songs, though. It's a good track, they should use it wisely. It'd be a shame if they end up using it every single time it rains near the Academy.

I have to agree with Wise_Cracker and a few other commenters, This episode was not the best, while I did appreciate some of the humor like Battiwings using the doll to trick Wranglum, and some of the back and forth bickering. Overall though, I kind of felt that kids and parents might get out of this the wrong lesson which would be something of the effect of everyone should get along regardless of differences. MLP G4 did this lesson a bit better when Pinkie Pie went overboard trying to befriend Cranky Doodle Donkey and ended up making him really mad, in the end, she learned to respect others differences and that it is okay if not everyone was the bestest of best friends. This episode seemed to focus more on the two reaching a compromise that consisted of you do your thing I'll do mine, with no room for sharing different interests. I think that it would have been better if the girls had been able to come up with something where Lynn could appreciate Rose's good-natured bumbling and Rose could appreciate some level of scary things. It seemed that even Miss Sparkle despite what she said about friendship being a two-way street, was intent on these two girls becoming BFF's despite having almost nothing in common personality wise. Rambling aside, I am definitely glad that this wasn't the first episode.
Rose and Lynn being best buddies at the end was really sudden and jarring; all it takes is running through the woods in the rain and a song for all of Rose's creeper-behavior (like brushing someone's hair at night!) to be forgiven, and somehow making it seem like Lynn was just as in the wrong as Rose for not enjoying being stalked and liking...different things? Rose was trying to be friendly, but just undoing everything in someone's room and interfering with their business makes Rose a bit hard to empathize with. It was also kinda funny that the faculty of Funtasia didn't do anything to find the two in the woods during the storm and just kinda hoped it'd all work out; I'd think their parents would be upset if anything happened to their kids!
